What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a health care profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of neuromusculoskeletal disorders and the effect of these disorders on general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal adjustments and other joint and soft tissue manipulation. Chiropractic care emphasizes the power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery, while recognizing the value and responsibility of working in cooperation with other health care practitioners when in the best interest of the patient.
What kind of conditions can you treat with chiropractic?
Almost anything! Neuromusculoskeletal disorders include any problems with your nerves, muscles, bones and joints including the connective tissue that binds them. This leaves out the treatment of other organ systems (digestive organs, sensory organs, endocrine, immune system, etc), but anyone who has seen a chiropractor can tell you that these organs can be effected by chiropractic adjustments, though it may not be as predictable.
But don't you have to keep seeing a chiropractor if you start?
It depends. Chronic conditions can take a while to reverse. How long have you had that bad posture? Can you expect something that has been bothering you for twenty years to resolve in two weeks? Some conditions resolve faster than others, it is true, but how hard you work on yourself will shorten that time by a huge margin. Be a good patient - do your homework. Then come back and see me when you've injured yourself or begin to feel something is wrong, not after it's been a problem for longer than you care to admit. I promise to get you better as quickly as your body will allow and work as hard as you are willing to - I want results. Everyone wants to see a doctor who gets results.
I'm uncomfortable with being "cracked."
No problem. I've got plenty of other tools in my toolbox that don't make any noise.
What is Active Release Technique (ART)?
ART is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.
What's an overused muscle?
Over-used muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways:
Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendonitis, and nerves can become trapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.
- acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc),
- accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
- not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia).

What is an ART treatment like?
Every ART session is actually a combination of examination and treatment. The ART provider uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.
These treatment protocols - over 500 specific moves - are unique to ART. They allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. ART is not a cookie-cutter approach.

What is the first appointment like?
Your first appointment is approximately 75 minutes long, though it can run a little longer. When you come into the office, there will be a few forms to sign if you did not sign them online beforehand. We will spend most of our time taking a detailed history and examining your problem areas. Then we will do 15-20 minutes of Active Release Technique and a (most likely) full spine adjustment. We will then discuss exercises/stretches for home and any supporting nutritional recommendations that come up. You will also receive a full report of all of these things and written instructions for your exercises/stretches for reference.
How much does it cost?
The first visit, being that it's much longer and much more extensive information gathering, will cost $250 and last about 75 minutes. Follow up visits cost $80 and last 25 minutes. Cash, check, credit cards, HSA, FSA, chickens, beef and farm-fresh produce accepted. Packages may be purchased to save time and money. Children under 12 get a free adjustment with an adult appointment.
Packages are as follows: 5 pack for $375, 10 pack for $700, and 15 pack for $975. These can be purchased at any time and do not expire.
All charges made on a credit card carry the 2.5% charge fee. Venmo carries a 1.94% fee.

Do you take insurance?
Because the office is small and I only work part time, I do not have the adequate staff to spend hours to weeks arguing with insurance companies and providing endless follow up phone calls. We do not currently accept insurance. We do not accept Medicare. We can supply you with any supporting documentation you require to submit to your insurance provider should you have out of network benefits for chiropractic care.
Despite how much we all wish our insurance covered maintenance and preventative care the same way it covers emergency care, this is not how it works. Large medical practices and hospitals have the staff to deal with the difficulties associated with extracting their hard-earned money from the insurance companies. They are also very well reimbursed. "Alternative" and "conservative" care practices like chiropractic, acupuncture, reflexology, etc are not well reimbursed, and are often completely denied payment. Just like you get paid at the end of the day for your hard work, I like to take home a paycheck, too. And without too much hassle ;).
